Ginger Rogers was a famous American actress, dancer and singer, who starred in 73 films during her career and was best known for her roles opposite Fred Astaire in ten revolutionary Hollywood musicals filmed throughout the 1930s. She went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1941 for Kitty Foyle (1940) and became the highest paid-performer in Hollywood in the mid 40s. She starred in Lady in the Dark in 1944, in which she wore this amazing gown designed by Edith Head. As one of the most expensive dresses ever created for film, it was designed to accentuate Ginger rogers' legs whilst still maintaining a sense of modesty. It combined a mink overskirt with a multicoloured jewelled bodice and underskirt. The strong shoulders and deep v-neckline are also reminiscent of fashions that have translated through to recent times, with the 'power shoulder' recently undergoing a major comeback.
