Gul Panag had a tough time shooting for Prakash Jha’s forthcoming venture Turning 30, being directed by his assistant Alankrita Shrivastava. The film is about the trials and tribulations of a woman turning 30. And the character required Gul to smoke in the film.Gul is one person who is absolutely anti-smoking. She can’t bear the smell of cigarette smoke. Lighting up a cigarette was a real challenge for the ex-Miss India.
Assistants on the film claim they had to spend a lot of energy and effort rolling special herbal cigarettes for her. In fact one assistant was entirely devoted to doing just that. The director tried to cajole Gul into smoking real cigarettes, but Gul was adamant and stuck to her guns. When asked Gul, she says, “I’m against smoking… but it was important for the character to smoke so I had to. However, I smoked only herbal cigarettes.”The film is a young urban love story and woman-centric film. Also it is the first non-political story by Prakash Jha,” So Gul is high on principles rather than cigarettes
